Helping a Parent Move

Helping an Aging Parent Downsize or Move

Helping a parent through this transition is rarely simple. There are logistics to manage, decades of belongings to sort through, and often, more emotion in the process than anyone expects, for your parent and for you.

My role is to make the real estate side of this as clear and manageable as possible: understanding what the home is worth, what needs to happen before it’s ready to sell, and what a realistic next home looks like, whether that’s a smaller home, a single-level layout, an independent living community, or a place closer to family.

A Note on Approach

A Note on Approach

I try to keep communication simple, with one clear point of contact for the family, rather than everyone getting different pieces of information at different times. That usually means working closely with whichever family member is coordinating things, while staying respectful and patient with your parent throughout the process.

This is also often a slower, more sensitive process than a typical sale, and I never try to rush it. Sorting through a lifetime of belongings, deciding what stays and what goes, takes real time, and I build the timeline around that reality rather than a standard sales timeline.

For anything involving estate planning, powers of attorney, or long-term care and Medicaid planning, I always recommend working with an elder law attorney or financial advisor, and I’m glad to coordinate with them wherever it’s helpful.

Common Questions

Common Questions

My parent isn't fully on board with moving yet. How do you handle that?

+

This comes up often, and there's no need to rush it. I'm happy to have a low-pressure conversation with your parent directly, or simply provide information for your family to discuss together, on their timeline, not mine.

How do we even start with decades of belongings to go through?

+

This is usually the biggest hurdle, and I can connect you with trusted professional organizers, estate sale companies, and moving specialists who work with families in exactly this situation, so you're not managing it all alone.

What is my parent's home actually worth?

+

I'll walk you through a clear, honest valuation based on recent comparable sales in the area, so your family has real numbers to plan around, whatever you decide to do next.

Does the home need updates before it can sell?

+

Often, homes that haven't been updated in years still sell well with the right pricing and preparation. I'll give you an honest read on what's worth doing, if anything, so you're not spending money unnecessarily.

What kind of home should we even be looking for next?

+

This depends entirely on your parent's needs, whether that's single-level living, proximity to family, or an independent or assisted living community. I'll help you search with those specific priorities in mind, not just a generic bedroom count.

Who should be my main point of contact, my parent or our family?

+

Whoever makes the most sense for your situation. Many families designate one adult child to coordinate closely with me, while I stay respectful and communicative with the parent directly as well.
